Have you taken a tour of McKinney’s historic sites, visited an art gallery, enjoyed a scrumptious meal at any of McKinney’s one-of-a-kind downtown eateries, explored the miles of nature trails throughout the city, or strolled in our own little piece of Croatia?

This week, the McKinney Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCVB) will be helping McKinney residents learn all about the fun, educational and “touristy” things that McKinney has to offer as we observe National Travel & Tourism Week (May 1-7).

This celebration of domestic travel, established by a congressional resolution in 1983, is presented by the U.S. Travel Association the first week of May each year.

Tourism organizations, like the MCVB, primarily promote our cities to regions outside our city limits to entice visitors to come stay in our hotels, spend money on food, shopping and entertainment, then return home with wonderful memories of their visit. During National Travel and Tourism Week, however, we turn our focus closer to home.

The upcoming week is a fun change-of-pace for us as we work to educate our locals about the city in which we live. Well-informed residents, after all, make the best ambassadors for our city when showing visiting family members and friends where they live.

One of our favorite days during this special week is our Public Safety Appreciation Day on Tuesday. Our staff will pay tribute to the fire, police and other emergency personnel by feeding them lunch in our office to express our thanks to them for keeping McKinney residents and visitors safe every day.

For more information about National Travel & Tourism Week in McKinney or anything else about our quaint city, follow us on Facebook (“Destination McKinney”) and Twitter (@VisitMcKinney). Our website is another helpful resource for all things McKinney, and if you have a question, please call us at 214-544-1407.

We also invite you to stop by the MCVB Visitors Center located a block west of the downtown square (200 W. Virginia) to pick up McKinney information and a small gift. While you’re here, you’ll definitely want to check out our Made in McKinney store for cool McKinney-themed gift items and apparel.

We hope to see you soon, as we always love meeting the people who make McKinney such a special place to live and visit.
